Myanmar The Lady Carbonic Maceration Natural

A women-led project born in the hills of Shan.

In the lush heart of Myanmar, nestled among the mountains of Ywangan, a remarkable initiative was born in 2017: The Lady Specialty Coffee. It was founded by Su Nandar Linn and Thi Ha Gyawalie, two leading figures in Myanmar’s specialty coffee scene. Their vision? To give voice and value to the work of female coffee growers by equipping them with the tools to grow, improve, and thrive.

From the very beginning, the project has stood out for its tangible commitment: all coffees under the The Lady label are cultivated exclusively by women from the Pa-O and Danu ethnic communities. What began as a collaboration with 51 producers from the village of Nwar Ban Gyi quickly evolved into a strong and passionate network, now involving over 400 women across seven villages in the region: Nwar Ban Gyi, Taung Khaung Pwar, Pway Na Phar, Myaing, Myin Dwin, Myin Kya Doe, and Ga Zat.

Cupper's notes

Cupper's notes

A surprisingly juicy and bright coffee, opening with fresh and delicate notes of pomegranate, followed by an explosion of vibrant citrus acidity reminiscent of pomelo (similar to grapefruit). On the palate, it is round and lively, with a silky texture that enhances its drinkability. The finish is sweet and persistent, leaving a honeyed aftertaste that gently lingers long after the last sip.

But The Lady is much more than just a coffee producer. It’s a true development model, rooted in environmental sustainability, female empowerment, and the recognition of local agricultural labor. Su Nandar and Thi Ha personally oversee every step of the processing, working side by side with the women to help them reach the highest standards of quality.

Their commitment is matched by bold and ethical choices:

  • The women farmers receive 20% of the final profits, a tangible and well-deserved recognition of their work.

  • Premium quality cherries are paid up to three times the market price, encouraging excellence and rewarding quality.

  • Selected seeds are distributed to new producers and to areas with strong development potential.

  • Technical training programs are offered to small emerging growers in nearby regions.

The Lady Specialty Coffee is therefore more than just a name — it’s a symbol of empowerment, quality, and community. A project where every sip tells a story of dedication, tradition, and hope.
